Writing a novel can be a long and difficult endeavor and writer's block can wait for you around every corner and you may end up creating something mediocre at best. The secret to a well-written novel is defining all the characters, places, situations and conflicts before anything else. Once you've done this, everything will sort of fall into place. This is the approach that bibisco proposes. It is a free application, designed to help you write a novel step by step. It provides you with useful tips and it tells you what must be done before you start telling your story.

The software's components can be extracted directly from a ZIP archive, so you don't have to go through an installation process. You can use bibisco on any modern-day Windows platform, without encountering any compatibility issues. The hardware requirements are modest and you don't need to sacrifice a significant amount of memory or processing power.

The software places several variations of the same text editing tool at your disposal. You can use them to write different ideas in separate sections. For example, you can write a general description of your novel, sort events by their logical chronological order, specify locations and so on. Once you are done organizing everything, you can start writing the actual story. For this, the software lets you brake it down into chapters and scenes and it also lets you specify reasons and write down ideas and cues as separate notes.

An interesting feature is the possibility of creating character sheets. Because a well-defined character can make all the difference between an interesting story and a boring one, bibisco lets you write down character names, along with numerous characteristics. The best part is that all these details can be filled in by answering a series of questions, through which you can jump back and forth with ease.

You can refer to your notes and character sheets at any time during the writing process and you may also access various analysis tools. All these elements are stored separately for each project, so you don't have to worry about mixing one novel's details with those from another story. Regardless of their state, novels can be exported in rich text format (RTF), as a PDF or in bibisco's own format.

If you're about to write a novel for the first time, bibisco will help you start with your right foot and it will guide you with helpful tips all the way.

Pros

The software provides useful tips for writing a novel. It lets you brake everything down, so you can better organize your story's elements. The software is lightweight, it doesn't need to be installed and it is offered completely free of charge.

Cons

The software's controls may disappear and everything can be a bit uncomfortable if you don't keep the user interface maximized.
